Confirming piece of family history
PILESGROVE TWP. She may not appear on television, but for Betsy Harris, her experience with the popular PBS series "Antiques Roadshow" is one she'll long remember. When the show's producers taped new episodes in Philadelphia last summer, she had the chance to have a Harris family heirloom examined by one of the country's top appraisers of early American furniture. Most importantly, the experience helped confirm the stories that, like the desk, had been handed down through several generations of the Harris family. Harris and her husband, Grant, are now the owners of the piece. "It provided validation on the age of the desk," Harris said. The first of the three "Antiques Roadshow" episodes taped in Philadelphia premieres tonight at 8 p.m.
Night Spots Give a leg up to therapy horses
I first became aware of equine, or hippotherapy ("hippo" being the Greek word for "horse," as in "hippopotamus" meaning "river horse"), several years ago when I attended a fundraiser at Winslow Therapeutic Center in Warwick. I am no fan of horses, but I became one (albeit from a distance) when I realized how much good they can do for people with disabilities of all kinds. Coincidentally, it also was a visit to Winslow that inspired Patricia Dickinson to train and test for North American Riding for the Handicapped Association certification, which qualifies her to teach horseback riding to children with disabilities. It has also helped her make her dream a reality: Cloud Nine Therapeutic Riding Center in Brackney, Pa. Research has shown there are many ways this kind of therapy can benefit children, as well as adults.
Tips for searchers
Two Great Falls collectors, Mark McCaffrey and Dorene Woody, have some advice for those starting out in the pursuit of antiques. Like what you buy. Dont buy antiques as an investment. Their values might go up, but there are no guarantees. Buy quality and condition. Cracks and chips diminish value. Watch for reproductions. In furniture, check materials inside and underneath. Know original markings and materials used in other items. Go to museums to study authentic collections. Stick with reputable dealers. Study. There are no shortcuts. If youre unsure of an items value, get an appraisal before you sell it. Check www.replacements.com for gaps in a collection of dishes.
