Campaign to save historic market

WINCHESTER campaigners fighting to save a historic market were hoping to make their voices heard before civic chiefs last week.

Traders at the King's Walk Antiques and Crafts Market have gathered a petition with some 3,500 signatures opposing the building's demolition.

The 19th century building is due to be demolished as part of the Silver Hill redevelopment.

A group of traders and supporters attended the city council's Cabinet meeting in the Guildhall last Wednesday, but were disappointed to be told the subject wouldn't be discussed at the forum, but instead at a future planning meeting.

One of protesters, Ann Whatley, said of the plan to demolish the market and replace it with new shops: "Winchester would lose a tremendous tourist attraction - we get people here from all over the world."

Horses abound

Imagine a massive animal that stands almost seven feet tall and weighs nearly a ton. It could break your foot if it made a misstep.

Unless youve been living under a rock, youve heard of these animals. Maybe youve seen them in commercials (the Budweiser Clydesdales) or parades. But you may not realize their full capacity.

Draft horses are known for their strength, longevity and temperament. Riding them is nearly impossible because of their enormous size; therefore, they are primarily used for farm labor.

Anyone interested in buying one of these animals or merely catching a glimpse of them can find a variety at Boone County Fairgrounds, along with mules and ponies. They are a part of the Boone County Draft Horse & Mule Sale, which started Wednesday and continues at 9 a.m.

Fraternity brothers auctioned for charity

One of the biggest Greek life social events of the year took place Monday night in Gerlinger Hall - an auction. But instead of bidding on antiques or repossessed property, the sorority women bid on fraternity men.

As part of a five-day event called Derby Days, the University's sorority members bid on skits and presentations by Sigma Chi in an effort to raise money to help send donations to Sacred Heart Medical Center's Children's Miracle Network. The money raised throughout the week will be donated to help premature babies in the neonatal unit at Sacred Heart.

"This also shows the good things sororities do," Kappa Delta sophomore Alexa Tieu said. "This is the kind of thing people don't see - raising money for kids."

She added that when women join sororities, people will sometimes stereotype them as ditzy blondes.

Taxes due on sale of antiques

DEAR BRUCE: I had acquired some antiques about 30 years ago. I have since learned they are quite valuable. I sent them to a well-known auction house and was shocked to learn I have cleared more than $200,000. I have no record of the cost to me, but I know they came with a bunch of other antiques and they cost literally nothing. Do I have to report this to the IRS? What are my obligations here? - E.N., via e-mail

DEAR E.N.: Bad news. You will have to pay capital gains on whatever portion of the $200,000 you net. Having no receipts to demonstrate your cost basis, you're going to have to do some homework and find out what these same articles likely were worth 30 years ago. Your auction house should be able to give you some estimation there. All things equal, and your personal income is a variable, tax on the gain will very likely be the max of 15 percent.

A PEEK BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

Sensuous design lies in the details: By adding a very personal accent or two, we can turn bedrooms into intimate havens. Here are ways some local homeowners made their bedrooms special.

Color counts

"I've fallen in love with these jewel tones," said Faye Young, looking at the deep golds and ruby reds of her small but sumptuous master bedroom. "Most people start with a piece of furniture or a rug, but I always start with the walls. Paint comes first and sets the mood."

Muralist and faux-finish artist Jeanne Chauffe used a reddish-gold plumb-line technique on the bedroom walls. "The lines fall down the wall like rain, creating a shimmering effect," she said.

"Everything fell into place from there," Young added.

Chauffe put a gold-leaf finish on the crown molding and a soft cloud effect on the ceiling to give the room a glow.
