Magazine Review: Antiques And The Arts Weekly
We've received a supply at the MagSampler.com newsstand of last week's Antiques And The Arts Weekly, a very impressive publication from The Bee Publishing Company in Newtown, Connecticut. It's a large tabloid newspaper of 160 pages, each 11 by 16 inches, and crammed with articles, pictures and advertisements about art, antiques and collectibles of all kinds. It's a prodigious ongoing publishing achievement!A lengthy article starting on the front page of that January 19 issue provides an appropriate introduction to the world of serious collecting. It's about a new book, Expressions of Innocence and Elegance: Selections from the Jane Katcher Collection of Americana. Jane Katcher is a Florida-based radiologist who's been collecting American paintings, weathervanes and other folk art for years.
Quebec's countryside ideal site for French class
If you've longed to open the dusty files of college French languishing in the back of your mind, the French-immersion program at the Auberge Schweizer in the quaint town of Sutton in Canada's Quebec province is perfect. Even if you don't speak a lick of French and don't want to learn, there are many reasons to go to the auberge (inn). Such as the delicious, healthy food: organic vegetables from the large garden, which flourishes just outside the kitchen; soothing country soups; freshly baked bread; and homey desserts, such as blueberry cobbler. Or the pastoral setting: a scenic backdrop of 130 acres of maple trees, ponds, hiking trails, rolling hills, blue skies, golden sunsets and clean air. Or the feeling of being engulfed in nature: Flowers bloom. Horses graze, gallop and roll in the lush grass.

Farm artist to exhibit at tractor show
GALESBURG - A nationally known farm artist will be in Galesburg with his Norman Rockwell-inspired farm scenes this weekend. Charles Freitag will make his second appearance during the Maple City Antique Tractor Association's annual Mall Tractor Show, which is Saturday and Sunday at Sandburg Mall. An estimated 80 antique tractors of all brands will fill the wings of Sandburg Mall. The show has grown three to four times its size since its start seven years ago, said Brad Underwood, show coordinator. In Center Court of the mall, Freitag will display his work, which primarily is nostalgic tractor art that includes either John Deere or Farmall tractors from the 1930s to 1970s. He also will be painting and signing autographs. Freitag of Iowa has painted for 21 years and in the last 12 years has sold tens of thousands of prints of his nearly 50 farm paintings across the United States and around the world.
