Alvin Barger has enjoyed life

Today, the Bargers enjoy collecting antiques and traveling with family. They have two daughters, Dionne and Vickie. They have grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The Bargers have been longtime members of the Broad Street United Methodist Church. He credits God with the blessings he has received and thanks the Lord regularly for giving him his salvation, strength and ability.

His faith in the Lord Jesus Christ has led him to offer his service as the president of the Kelly Class at the church, where he has served as a mentor for young boys who are now community leaders in Cleveland.

He also served as a member of the Congregational Care Ministry through visiting the sick and taking flowers to area nursing homes. He said he is no longer able to get around as he once did, which makes it impossible for him to continue this ministry.

Chili helps take bite out of chill at Grayslakefest

Jack Frost nipped attendance for Grayslakes annual Winterfest Saturday, but hearty residents sampled chili, viewed ice sculptures and rode in horse-drawn wagons despite the bitter cold.

Due to the weather, attendance is down, but were doing fairly well. We canceled the Wacky Olympics due to the cold, but the hay wagons are going and the chili tent is full, said Rich Gaddis, director of the Grayslake Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The chamber has held Winterfest for five years, and the chili cook-off for the past three. Thirty-five cooks, including 20 members of the Chili Appreciation Society International, offered spicy bowls from steaming pots.

My secret ingredient is this, said Jim Akers, pointing to a bottle of Goose Islands 312 urban wheat ale. Akers was part of the spirited Farmers Market team.

Antique car race may be held here

The Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors officially gave its endorsement to a antique car race that might be making its way to Branson. This is exactly the kind of event that we are looking to bring to the area, Chamber President and CEO Ross Summers said at the boards monthly meeting Thursday. In our estimation its a very good event and could possibly become annual. Mark Trimble appeared before the Branson Board of Aldermen Monday on behalf of the Vintage Car Rally Association, the organization that will be putting on the race, to ask for $25,000 from the citys tourism tax contingency fund to bring the event to Branson. The aldermen voted to have City Administrator Terry Dody to enter into contractual negotiations with the association, but have yet to approve the giving of the $25,000.

Tubs go missing from 19th-century houses

The owners of a pair of missing clawfoot bathtubs know the antique fixtures didn't just walk away from their North Avenue homes and want the thief who took them to bring the tubs back.

The tubs came in two of nine turn-of-the-century houses that a North Avenue property owner recently donated to Habitat for Humanity.

Habitat, in turn, is selling the houses to people who are willing to move or dismantle them.

But, before two of those new owners could move their investments, thieves made off with two antique bathtubs, probably sometime last weekend.
