Patient and poor? Buy 'future antiques'
PHILADELPHIA -- What do a tea kettle, a toilet brush, and a trash can have in common? If they're award-winning designs by Michael Graves, Philippe Starck and Karim Rashid, they're antiques of the future, says a book with that title by design maven Lisa Roberts.
A former architect and product designer, Roberts began seeing high-design, mass-produced contemporary products as potential collectibles 25 years ago. Since then, she has amassed a collection of more than 300 objects, many of which are on display in her home.

The 16th Annual Cabin Fever Benefit for the Ronald McDonald House will be held on Sat., Feb. 10. This Roughrider Commission-sponsored benefit starts at 4:00pm with a social and silent auction at the Dickinson Eagles Club. Admission tickets are $5 in advance and $6 at the door, which covers an evening's entertainment including a Beef BBQ at 6:00pm. There will also be a dance with music by Midnite Ride, with donated items of artwork, western collectibles, weekend trips, apparel, services, and more, being auctioned throughout the evening. A raffle with two grand prize “Trips for Two" winners choice to either the 2007 National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, the 2007 PBR Finals in Las Vegas or the 2008 NASCAR RACE in Las Vegas (all Bismarck Charters). Collectors Universe Continues Heavy Investment in Grading Service ...
RAPAPORT... Collectors Universe Inc., parent company of grading services GCAL and AGL, closed its second fiscal quarter and half-year for 2007 on December 31, 2006. Net sales company wide rose 18 percent to $8.8 million for the second quarter. The company reported an operating loss of $875,000 for the second quarter, which was offset by increase in net revenues resulting in a net loss of $100,000, or 1-cent per diluted share. The operating results for second quarter reflected (in part) an increase in operating losses of $747,000 incurred by the diamond grading business as Collectors Universe continued investing in growth strategy. Gross margin declined company wide to 50 percent in the second quarter from 58 percent one year ago. For six months ending December 31, net revenues rose 15 percent to $18.7 million and profits fell 80 percent to $294,000 or 3-cents per share.
Ashley Ready For First Test In CARQUEST Winternationals
Hers may be the most anticipated debut in NHRA drag racing history, but 24-year-old Ashley Force has kept her own expectations modest and manageable on the eve of the season-opening 47th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. Despite the media circus that has sprung up around her since the Jan. 16 confirmation that she was turning pro and joining her father, 14-time NHRA champion John Force, on the most successful team in Funny Car drag racing history, Ashley has resisted the temptation to buy into all the hype. For one thing, she balks at the suggestion that she is a shoo-in to win the Auto Club's 2007 Road to the Future Award as the NHRA Rookie-of-the-Year and she cringes at the prediction that she finally will end female frustration in a category that has become the last bastion of male dominance.
