Five Islanders hopeful about Golden Gloves

That's the range of the five Staten Islanders who will be on the card at the Dr. Theodore Atlas Foundation-sponsored Daily News Golden Gloves preliminaries Tuesday at the College of Staten Island's Sports and Recreation Center in Willowbrook.

Action begins at 7 p.m. and the doors open at 6 p.m.

The veteran is Midland Beach resident Jay Cascio who last competed in 2002, the Gloves' 75th anniversary.

"It took me a while to get my priorities straight," said Cascio, a 201-pound novice entry who trains at Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn. "This, though, is my last Gloves."

Of the others, only David Johnson (178-pound novice) has previous Golden Gloves experience.

"Last year at Monsignor Farrell," said the Port Richmond resident who trains at Kingsway Boxing in downtown Manhattan.

Days are still full, but deadlines less pressing

If I had a dollar for every time I've heard that question since retiring, I might not have to apply for Social Security. Almost everyone who's still working seems to think that once the big day comes, you have nothing to do but sit on your hands all the time.

CPHS seeks fundraiser participants

Area skiers, snowboarders and especially the non-skiing public are invited to take part in the ninth annual CPHS Ski for the Animals fundraising campaign to benefit homeless animals at the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society.

A special ski-a-thon is under way with participants collecting pledges and vying for prizes for the top fundraisers.

The grand prize this year will be a choice of either a two-night stay in a luxury condo at Blue Knob All-Seasons Resort, Pavia, or a season lift pass.

Both prizes were donated by the resort, a prime sponsor of the campaign, along with Spokes n Skis, Lakemont.

We hope this will be a major incentive in our fundraising efforts, said Dave Hopkins, CPHS director of fundraising/public relations.

We had a very slow start with the lack of snow that has had a major impact on the ability of our school ski clubs to become involved as they have in the past.
