Master craftsman reproduces Early American furniture

With power equipment and antique hand tools, woodworker James King toils daily to preserve the techniques and furniture styles of the master craftsmen of early America.

In his home in rural Hudson, Ill., King, 51, builds reproductions of fine furniture produced by artisans in this country from 1700 to 1850.

Period-inspired furniture and historical reproductions are the focus of King's business, Post and Beam, which he has operated full time for eight years.

He receives orders from museums, businesses and homeowners from across the United States - the majority from the northeast part of the country. His work can range in price from $800 for a small table to $15,000 for a copy of an 18th century highboy.

He recently was commissioned to build a reproduction of a 1775 Chippendale-style looking glass for George Washington's home in Mount Vernon, Va.

Nostalgic patrons find treasures at Metro auction

PORTSMOUTH -- The lights that once illuminated artwork hanging inside The Metro were still lit Saturday afternoon, but shined only on a blank wall.

All the antique posters -- along with nearly 200 other items -- had been auctioned off and removed from the restaurant, drawing an end to The Metro's 27 years in existence.

About 100 people attended the auction, and while many were looking for a good deal on the impressive antiques collection, just as many attended to bring home a piece of the restaurant that had served as a meeting place for so many over the years.

"It's sad to see a piece of history go," said Carolyn Carroll, who called herself a regular at the High Street establishment. She purchased two European posters from the late 19th and early 20th century to give to her kids, who, as children, would also come to the restaurant and play on the grand piano.

Thanks to all who made caboose donation possible

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the latest acquisition of railroad history at the Toy Train Depot Museum, 1991 N. White Sands Blvd.

The former Ronald McDonald's Railroad Caboose has a new home. And I promise we will take good care of her.

Thank you Malcolmn Ramsey and all the McDonald's people for donating this beautiful artifact to the museum.

Thank you Randy Rabon and the crew from Mesa Verde and Larry Berry and the folks from Basin Pipe and Metal for moving the caboose in one piece with no damage.

Thank you all the volunteers that work at the museum and keep the antique park trains running through Alameda Park. Roy, Lee, Patrick, Don, Fred, Hugh, and the many others who have worked there past and present.

And most of all thank you 92-year-young John Koval for having the inspiration and the passion to open the first railroad museum in the state of New Mexico 25 years ago.

A field guide to observing young social creatures in their South Florida habitat

Nobody likes the word 'socialite' anymore.

"Before it was someone prim and proper and invovled in her community. Now I think the 'socialite' today is more of an opportunist — upwardly mobile," said Merrill Duemler-Debbs, a three-time co-host of the Boys & Girl's Club Barefoot on the Beach fund-raiser.
