| Jazz up your life
One of the highlights of the day for many is relaxing in a bar after work, especially a jazz bar. Having a drink and listening to jazz can help melt away stress and refresh your depleted energy supply. But recently, more and more bars are converting into boisterous pubs, and it's getting harder to find a quiet place to listen to some jazz. With this in mind, Citylife has put together a list of bars to help you jazz up your life. Beijing CD Jazz Cafe Club CD Jazz Club was one of the first jazz clubs in Beijing, and is the first choice for many a jazz lover. Silver pieces brighten rooms in winter
Q: My home looks so blah and boring in the winter months. How can I brighten it up a bit before spring? A: You need to add the high-voltage of silver. No other room accessory is more versatile or more brilliant than a piece of brightly polished silver. I've loved this precious metal for years. I adore it all, from sterling silver to silverplate to hotel silver. I even like serving pieces that look like silver but aren't, like the high-luster aluminum bowls and trays so popular today. Like anyone who is blinded by love, my passion for silver has caused me to act in ways that would not make my mother proud. Here's an example. When my husband Dan's mother, Mimi, decided to move near where we live in Atchison, Kan., I volunteered to help her pack. We were in her garage sorting through Mimi's voluminous collection of dishware (another of my addictions) when I spotted an old grocery bag filled with the most gorgeous silver flatware I've ever seen.
An Energetic Evolution
SHARALYN FERREL has two rules for a garden. "One, it has to be fabulous or functional. Two, you have to drink champagne." Fabulous and functional, her Bellevue garden captured this year's grand prize in the 14th-annual Pacific Northwest Gardens: A Competition for Home Gardeners. Ferrel's award is a trip for two to London, five nights' lodging and admission to the May 2007 Chelsea Flower Show. The Seattle Times' Pacific Northwest magazine and the Northwest Flower & Garden Show, in cooperation with the Arboretum Foundation, sponsored the competition. Ferrel's gardening style is both formal and exuberant. In keeping with neighborhood covenants and restrictions, her entry garden is restrained, elegant and classical in the European courtyard tradition. In back, however, a lush, tropical style better reflects her outgoing personality.

Jawonio starts online auction to raise funds
Since its inception 60 years ago, Jawonio has been raising money to help support programs for people with disabilities. On Friday it began a new fundraising effort with the launch of an online auction, one of the first by a nonprofit organization in Rockland County. The auction, which offers 90 items of art, collectibles, sports and movie memorabilia, vacations, jewelry and more, will continue for four weeks. Many items were donated; others were collected for golf outings or were bought specifically for the auction. All proceeds will go toward helping people with disabilities and special needs. Jawonio hopes the new Web site and online auction will work hand-in-hand to publicize its work and programs, as well as become a new tool for fundraising.
