Police trace the murky trail of a mountain man
Based on the similarities in encampments and crime reports, State Police quickly concluded he was the same person who committed similar crimes in Clinton County, near Chazy Lake, in 2003-04. He apparently spent a winter in a lean-to in the woods there.Efforts to use police dogs and a State Police helicopter to catch him in October were unsuccessful, but police got a break last week when Horicon plow drivers spotted bicycle tire tracks in the snow on Beaver Pond Road. That prompted police to search an area near Beaver Pond Road, a two-day jaunt in rugged terrain that ended with Como in custody and a cache of stolen goods discovered near his campsite.A large man, police said Como was in very good shape with little body fat and broad, muscular legs. He immediately asked for a lawyer, and police have been unable to determine why he chose Warren County or the Brant Lake area, or why he decided to live in the forest.Warren County Sheriff Larry Cleveland said he did tell police, though, that he has lived in the woods for 20 years. And that tale is corroborated by the fact he last had a driver's license in Massachusetts in 1986 and "seems to have fallen off the face of the Earth" after that, Cleveland said.
Magazine Ideas: Ramp up the romance
If you've chosen a special something for a special someone for that special day in February, be sure to wrap it in a special package. The February issue of Country Home has some ideas: _Head for the thrift store to find a 45 record that suits your sentiments, anything from "I Want to Hold Your Hand" by the Beatles to "Go All the Way" by the Raspberries. Tape a photograph on the back of the record so it shows through the spindle hole. Tie this musical picture frame to the top of your gift. _Tie an antique key on the gift with velvet ribbon. It not only looks neat but also carries a message - something about unlocking your heart. _Repackage store-bought or homemade truffles and other candy in old film canisters. Glue interesting antique drawer knobs to the top for an added flourish.
