No bull: This china shop is one to brake for

GREENSBORO, N.C. - To walk into the 300,000-square-foot warehouse of delicate china, crystal and rare artifacts is like stepping into a bygone era.

On one shelf sits pieces from your mother's old china pattern, on another perhaps, the silver tea service that used to sit atop a lace doily on the buffet in your grandmother's dining room.

In this casual age of Crate & Barrel and Pier 1, Replacements, Ltd. - which boasts more than 250,000 china, crystal and silver patterns, some of them more than a century old, signals something antique lovers have always known: Things that are old can often become new again.

This is certainly not the only place people can go to find a replacement for a broken china cup or a missing sterling fork. Dozens of other companies provide similar services and flea markets have been a major resource for years, but nowhere is it done on such grand scale.

Negros shuttlers cop 7 titles in 'Dinagyang' tournament

Shuttlers from Negros Occidental stamped their class on the 3rd Mayor Jerry Treas Dinagyang Tournament at the Sportsville Badminton Court in Iloilo City over the weekend by claiming seven titles.

Nikki Therese Servando spearheaded the Negrenses' charge, snaring four championships during the two-day competition that was participated in by about 300 bets from all over Western Visayas.

Servando, a Grade 6 student at Trinity Christian School, started her bid by beating Cadiz City-born Diane Bibiano in the 12-Under girls' singles finals, before grabbing the 16-Under girls' singles crown against Andrea Palanog of Antique.

The 12-year-old Servando also added a pair of doubles title after teaming up with Dessa Mae Ario of Cadiz in the 12-Under and 16-Under girls' doubles.

Collectibles becoming the new kiddie-land

Sure, adults have infiltrated the collecting ranks in serious numbers over the past quarter-century, but cards remain an inherently youth-driven enterprise. Why else would companies like Topps and Upper Deck be so concerned about their products' attraction among the kiddie corps?Let's face it, guys like me aren't in their long-range marketing plans. Of course, they won't turn the Boomers away over the short term. Hey, it's just smart business. But a strange twist has occurred in recent years. Suddenly, the kids aren't only collectors, they're also the ones being collected.I'm not talking about the folks depicted on general-issue rookie cards. Those are big-dollar-earning pros, even if some of them aren't old enough to shave.I refer instead to those athletes who are barely old enough to date. This came to mind after I received an e-mail from Topps that talked about its multiyear sponsorship agreement with MSL Sports, which serves as host for the East Meets West All-American Game.
