Old becomes new again in Edna Valley

What she said then: When The Tribune spoke to Pattea Torrence in September 2006, the owner of the Old Edna town site had bought Fiala’s gourmet sandwich shop from its owner and chef Edy Fiala. Fiala’s, known for its Italian sandwiches and desserts, was located in the Old Edna town hall, a 100-year-old metal building that Torrence had owned for six years. Torrence, who also owns and operates a bed and breakfast inn on the old town site, planned to reopen the space as an antique and gift store with a small takeout deli by the mid-October last year. "We will cater to our shoppers, the wineries and work force out here in the valley," Torrence said.

What she says now: The new Old Edna Antiques and Custom Gourmet Deli will open Tuesday, Torrence said.

This is the second time the old building has housed an antique gallery.

Birkirkara beat Melita

Birkirkara Azzopardi Antiques continued where they had left off the previous week by beating Melita Wilkinson Sword 7-2 in their latest match from the Malta Table Tennis Association national league at the University Sports Hall.

Birkirkara, who had the better of champions Banks ROL before their match against Melita, are now joint first on 31 points.

However, Banks ROL, with a better set average in favour, will have a chance to seal the league title later on this month if they beat third-placed Melita in a decisive match for both teams.

The Table Tennis Academy team is the only unbeaten side in all divisions.

Division Two leaders Academy made it 11 wins from as many matches last week following yet another excellent performance on their way to beating HSBC 8-1.

Lincoln had a hand in preserving history

THE SAVVY Antiquer wants to share with you a little-known tale about Abraham Lincoln that has to do with historic preservation.

By the mid-1800s, around the time Lincoln was elected president of the United States, the wretched circumstances of American landmarks could swiftly bring sobs to history aficionados. For instance, the Boston home of honored American patriot and acclaimed silversmith Paul Revere had, through the years, been a candy store, cigar factory, bank and grocer.

Another sorrowful expose waited in Charleston, S.C., where the Heyward-Washington Mansion truly lived up to that exalted cliche "George Washington slept here."

Even the home of George Washington had literally become a dump. Mount Vernon fell from pristine to sorrowful circumstances after the 1802 death of Martha Washington.

Breakdowns of foreign troops in Iraq

QUESTION: How many troops do other countries have in Iraq, compared to how many they had at the beginning of the war?

ANSWER: Twenty-three countries have troops in Iraq (not counting Iran), and another 16 had troops there at one time but have withdrawn.

We don't have room to list the numbers for the entire multi-national force, so we'll just do the large contingents.

The United Kingdom started with 45,000 and is at 8,500. South Korea is at 2,300, down from 3,300. Australia has about 1,300, down from 2,000. Poland started with 194, peaked at 2,500 and is at 900.

The United States started with 250,000 and is at 132,000. The deployment from all countries is 146,680. To see all the numbers on all the countries, go to www.globalsecurity.org/military/ops/iraq_orbat_coalition.htm.
