Negrense cagers massacre Antique, 146-39
ROXAS CITY --- Shrugging off fatigue from its opening-match, defending champion Negros Occidental massacred Antique, 146-39, yesterday in the biggest victory of the men's basketball tournament of the 2007 Western Visayas Private Schools Athletic Association Meet at the Capiz Gymnasium here. All 13 players fielded by West Negros College coach Dennis Tumayan scored 2 points or more as the Negrenses surpassed the 104-point victory of Iloilo over Antique Thursday. The win was the Negrenses' second in a span of five hours. They routed Aklan, 91-64, yesterday morning behind WNC Mustangs Jomar Tan, Vengie Vergara and rookie Alfie Villariza, who combined for 36 points. But while the first two games were a breeze, Negros is expected to encounter rough sailing today when it battles unbeaten Iloilo at 10 a.m.
Magic Carpets Have Soared Into Salem`s Mission Mill
(SALEM) - Whether they are flying through the Disney-interpreted stories of Aladdin or embellishing the exotic salons of the rich and fashionable, carpets have become icons of mysterious Eastern cultures as well as an accepted and often overlooked part of our own. From this unique position, traditional carpets from the Silk Road are prime material for cross-cultural discussion and exploration. That is the premise behind the LANGUAGE OF THE CARPETS & THE MAGIC CARPET PROJECT exhibit at the Mission Mill Museum from February 2nd through April 14th. In cooperation with the Magic Carpet Cultural Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to the fostering of cross-cultural understanding through arts and education, antique, tribal, and village carpets and textiles created by nomadic weavers from Anatolia to Azerbaijan will be on display through mid-April.
Sometimes, it's best to see greatness from afar
I have learned over the years that when my husband describes something to me, he rarely exaggerates. In fact, the more unbelievable he makes something sound, the more likely it is he's telling the truth. Steve started work at the News Journal about 18 months before I did, so by the time I walked into the newsroom, he'd told me about most of the people on staff. He informed me that Lou Whitmire guy was actually a very nice WOMAN. He suggested I share cute stories about our puppy with Karen Palmer, the office animal-lover. He told me to make friends with Deb Mehl, who's one of those behind-the-scenes people who makes everything work. .
