| Gateway may go up near campus
What is now an ordinary patch of grass across the street from campus may soon be transformed into an ancient ceremonial gateway, if a UF art professor gets his way. The gateway, an 8-foot-high, 4-foot-wide stone statue planned for the corner of Southwest 13th Street and Southwest Fifth Avenue, was approved Wednesday by the College Park/University Heights Advisory Board. Its architect, UF adjunct assistant professor of sculpture Brad Smith, presented the model because the board was looking for public art to place in the area known as the Southwest Fifth Avenue Triangle. According to the board's meeting minutes, $20,000 has been appropriated for the project. The still-unnamed statue, Smith said, was influenced by old architecture like Japanese arches and Egyptian pylons.
Vintage Affair 2007 raises thousands for cancer society
It began in 1994 as a wine- themed event at the old SouthTrust Bank building, with a small gathering of patrons who generously helped raise a little more than $10,000 to support the programs, services and research endeavors of the American Cancer Society. Fourteen years later, Vintage Affair 2007 celebrated the philanthropic dedication of a host of sponsors, patrons and volunteers who have continued the "harvest of grapes" for the cause for more than a decade. Last Saturday night more than 500 guests helped support that cause, raising nearly $400,000 during a Venetian-inspired experience at the Wynlakes Golf and Country Club. The fundraiser's unprecedented success has sustained its reputation as the area's most anticipated fundraiser of the year, with supporters donating wines throughout the fall for inclusion in the silent and live auction events of the big winter night.
A new way of selling the old
Antiques are big business - and there is no antiques business bigger than Tomlinsons. which has become a shrine for connoisseurs the world over. RON GODFREY, business editor, visits the North Yorkshire honey pot for home makers and aficionados alike. IF TOMLINSONS' 75,000 sq ft warehouse is a North Yorkshire cathedral dedicated to the thrilling thingamajigs of history, then Sarah Worrall is its high priestess. You only have to hear her intoning her litany of love for a madly beautiful (or is it beautifully mad? ) George III tilt-top breakfast table with crossbanded edge on a pedestal and four reeded supports on brass hairy paw casters to know that she speaks the language of antiques fluently and with passion. Such is her reverie within that mighty rectangle set against the rural sky outside Tockwith, that it is almost as though the £2,495 plus VAT price tag is an afterthought.
