Collecting Everything Cal Ripken

Cal Ripken's election to the Hall of Fame will have far-reaching effects on several aspects of baseball, not the least of which will be the ever-growing collectors' market.

As in every endeavor, there are all types of sportsmen who dabble in collecting. Some want to make money from their collections, some want to trade object for object and others wouldn't part with a favored autograph for love, money or any inducement.

Collectors Jay Strecker, Ted Patterson, Tom Spiker and Rich Rubin all have different ideas and opinions on sports collections and how Ripken's ascension into baseball immortality will impact his memorabilia.

"It is amazing what some people with a lot of money will pay for a rare item, Cal included. One of my fellow collectors paid $10,000 for a mint ticket from the first game of Ripken's streak," Strecker said.

Getting thrifty with thrift store manager

For many thrift store customers, shopping is the thrill of the hunt. For others, thrift store shopping is pure necessity. For Alicia McMurtrie, managing the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store on Ardmore Trail in South Bend is all about getting the products for shoppers sorted, on the shelves and back out the door. McMurtrie recently spoke with Tribune staff writer Robin Toepp about some of the challenges in the industry.

How long have you been associated with the St. Vincent de Paul Society?

I have been employed for 31 years -- (in the current position, store manager) about 25 years.

Dealers put on their thinking caps to attract new buyers

In reading the Fragments section of the February issue of the Maine Antique Digest, I was drawn to an article titled ''Attracting New Collectors.'' The article includes a press release appearing on www.dollyjohnsonantiqueshow.com for the Dolly Johnson 44th Annual Antiques Show March 10-11 in the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas.

Owner J.J. Frambes knows how to create a hook that will draw customers and media attention. The show's hook is 50 dealers offering items priced especially for new collectors. In addition, the Fort Worth Antiquarian Club will curate an exhibit featuring items from private collections titled ''Affordable Good Things.''

Engin Akın: Turkish cooking, handled with care

Chefs in expensive Istanbul restaurants cater to demand, and demand pushes them toward tasteless innovation. 'Innovation requires knowledge,' says Engin Akn.

TOMMASO NELLI
ISTANBUL - Turkish Daily News

Engin Akn's Istanbul residence is tucked in an alley a stone's throw from the Bosporus, and her huge living room windows look out over the passing ships. Antique embroideries, straight from the Sultan's palace, hang on the wall behind Perspex mounts.

Her eyes are striking: warm, curious, enthusiastic and analytical.

It is hard to imagine that this robe was a sultan's shaving cape. The embroidery calls to mind bishop mitres in Hungary and the Balkans, which in turn look like kaftans. Many objects in this spacious, comfortable and elegant house recall that trail of visual and tactile assonances that has strewn clues from China to Venice.
