SAD 53 community goes all out to aid Pittsfield family after fire

PITTSFIELD — Helen McAllister stood in the doorway of her upstairs bedroom, drinking in the sight of the antique bureau, stylish bed linens, a new carpet on the floor and a sweet lamp on the bedside table.

"It's like something out of a magazine," she said softly. "I am overwhelmed."

Downstairs was a beehive of activity. Schoolteachers, administrators, neighbors and friends were unpacking and putting away dishes, glasses, linens, movies, cleaning supplies — everything a family would need.

Families move every day, you say, so what's different about this one?

On Friday, the three-generation, six-member McAllister-Roland family had nothing but the clothes on their backs after a fire destroyed their rural Pittsfield home last week.

By Saturday afternoon, however, the family had four furnished bedrooms, a fully stocked kitchen, an office with a computer on the desk, a sunlit dining room, and a living room with a new television and comfy furniture.

Creative ways to package your Valentine's gift

If you've chosen a special something for a special someone for that special day in February, be sure to wrap it in a special package. The February issue of Country Home has some ideas:

• Head for the thrift store to find a 45 rpm record that suits your sentiments, anything from "I Want to Hold Your Hand" by the Beatles to "Go All the Way" by the Raspberries. Tape a photograph on the back of the record so it shows through the spindle hole. Tie this musical picture frame to the top of your gift.

• Tie an antique key on the gift with velvet ribbon. It not only looks neat but also carries a message -- something about unlocking your heart.

• Repackage store-bought or homemade truffles and other candy in old film canisters.

Police speaking out over stolen antique stoneware

WILTSHIRE Police have warned homeowners to be on their guard after a recent increase in the theft of antique stone roof tiles and traditional stoneware.

A number of tiles have been stolen from the roofs of remote farms and outbuildings and heavy stone troughs and staddle stones have been taken from gardens across rural Wiltshire.

Police believe the majority of the stolen items remain in the local area, possibly to be used in building projects, and so builders and reclamation yards are being asked to thoroughly check the source of any stone items they might buy.

Louvre Museum in talks to stage Greek, Islamic antique exhibitions

SINGAPORE : Art lovers in Singapore may be the first in Southeast Asia to see rare Greek artefacts dating back some 2,500 years and 15th century Islamic antiques. Paris' Louvre Museum is now in talks with the Asian Civilisations Museum to stage these exhibitions by the end of this year. For over two centuries, the Louvre Museum has been an inspiration and guardian of civilisations. Some 600,000 people from Asia visit the museum every year, and Louvre in turn wants to get to know Asia better. Louvre Museum has regular collaborations with Asian countries like Japan and China, and is currently helping Abu Dhabi set up its national museum. Mr Henri Loyrette, President and Director of the Louvre Museum in Paris, believes Singapore is an ideal venue to kick-start its first collaborations with the region.
