The Heat Is Off: With Legal Case Pending, Antiques Dealer Calls A ...

After sparking a media frenzy with his "mean-spirited" $1 million lawsuit, antiques dealer Karl Kemp is now exploring other options to keep the homeless away from his Madison Avenue storefront.

According to Wednesday's Daily News, Mr. Kemp has now cut off the hot air to a steam grate located out front, which seemed to be attracting the less-desirable foot traffic:

The once-toasty grate beneath Kemp's window - a mainstay for Greenlee and at least three other homeless people named in the lawsuit - had cooled to a near-freezing 38.9 degrees when the Daily News measured it yesterday.

"We put in new insulation, so now instead of all the hot air coming out in front, it goes out in the back," said a contractor from the East Meadow, L.I.-based construction company KMA Inc., who identified himself only as Kajus.

The antique trade is facing modern problems

EAST PROVIDENCE - Thanks to eBay, the rest of the Internet and the popular TV show "Antiques Roadshow," the world of antiques has gotten a lot of exposure recently. However, with heightened visibility comes misconceptions about older pieces. Shaffie Pillay, manager of the wholesalers D&M Antiques on North Broadway in East Providence, says while the trends have changed, antiques are still as valuable as ever.

Mr. Pillay was in the antiques restoration business at the back of the antique shop before joining owner Marvin Rubin in selling. The store is not a pretty retail storefront by his own admission, but is instead jam packed with old furniture, art and jewelry, along with clocks, dishes and all kinds of miscellaneous antiques. The East Coast in general is spoiled by a glut of antiques in comparison with more western parts of the country, and through estate sales, family calls and other purchases, D&M antiques is able to supply items to distributors all over the country.

FROM FANTASY TO REALITY

Successful garden design represents collaboration between people and nature. Professional garden designers specialize in managing that collaboration, and working with a great designer allows you to skip the fumbling and the mistakes and start enjoying a beautiful garden.

Landscape designers make it their job to interpret and realize your vision for your garden. In the hands of a good designer, a front walk isn't just a runway into the house, but a pleasant journey home. A patio becomes a refuge from the busy world, and well-chosen trees, shrubs and flowers turn an unremarkable lot into the prettiest place on the block.
