Patina's promise: Stories enrich 'Antiques Roadshow'

A blend of mostly orange hues in a jack-in-the-pulpit style, they belonged to my grandmother's family and were handed down to my father. Somehow they survived the ballgames my brother and I played in our living room while growing up. But when the beautiful vases became mine, I was so sure I would be their downfall that they now reside in a box -- many miles away from klutzy former infielders.

After talking with Marsha Bemko, I can't help wondering what their full story might be.

Bemko is executive producer of TV's Antiques Roadshow, which will make its first stop in Orlando on June 30, opening its doors to collectors who hope to learn more about their keepsakes. Part treasure hunt, part history lesson, the hourlong PBS show features quick-hit appraisals of antiques and collectibles at Roadshow events around the country.

Snow both boosts and blasts local businesses

For some owners, the weather provided an excuse for a stolen day off; for others, it actually brought a heavier, or slightly different, flow of customers into their stores.

Snow and antique sales didn't mix well.

Jeff Nelson, of Le Stuff Antique Mall, said he opened for just a few minutes and, after talking with the nearby business owners, decided to shut down. "I could get more work done closed," he said, explaining he spent the day catching up on paperwork.

Steve Stratford likewise made a last-minute decision not to open his restaurant and antique store at the corner of Main and Second Avenue. He said business is usually terribly slow on bad weather days, and Wednesday's beginning thaw hadn't been enough to turn it around.

Some stores shut completely and remained closed Wednesday: Let's Play toy store, Kathy's Knit Korner and MIR.

Slater's birthday party for McQueen detailed

The actor, box-office champion and icon of "cool" will be honored by civic and business officials from his hometown with a special weekend festival to celebrate his life and commemorate what would have been his 77th birthday.

McQueen was born on March 24, 1930, in Beech Grove, Ind., but moved to Slater when he was an infant and remained there for most of the next decade.

The Slater Chamber of Commerce and the City of Slater, will host the 2007 "Steve McQueen Days" on March 24 and March 25 with a slate of events honoring the superstar.

"The City of Slater decided it was time to recognize the amazing accomplishments of a man who spent his early years in our community and had a lasting impact on the history of film and popular culture," said Slater Mayor Stephen Allegri.
