At local antiques show, everything old is new again :

Annapolis is a city steeped in history, but this weekend the scope expanded beyond the state capital to the world with a cornucopia of rare and artful antiques.

Everything from medieval European manuscripts to 18th- and 19th-century French and English barometers are for sale at the annual Historic Annapolis Antiques Show.

"It's a great location," said dealer Philip Dubey of Baltimore. "Annapolis has got such history. It's a perfect place to (show) stuff off."

The three-day event, which also includes plenty of unique furniture and art, concludes late this afternoon at Medford National Guard Armory. One of the show's 32 dealers hails from England and two are from Annapolis. The rest are from other parts of the country.

"We like it here, it's very intimate," said Tom Dawson of Dawson Gallery in Annapolis, who has been a dealer at the show for about 17 of its 37 years.

Man banned from eBay for alleged shilling

LONDON, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- A British man, one of eBay.com's "Titanium PowerSellers," has been permanently removed from the Web site for alleged shill bidding.

Shill bidding is when the seller artificially drives up the price of an auction, The Sunday Times of London said.

Eftis Paraskevaides, an antiquities dealer from Cambridgeshire, England, allegedly used his ex-wife's eBay account to drive up the prices of at least 400 items, the newspaper reported.

Six users were permanently banned from the auction site after after The Sunday Times ran an investigation on shill bidding and passed the evidence on to eBay, the newspaper said.

Paraskevaides antique company made around $2.7 million, making him a "Titanium PowerSeller" and one of eBay's top earners.

Last month he told an undercover reporter that he was able to have business associates bid on his auctions, The Sunday Times alleged.

Jane Page Thompson laughed wildly as she drew the sunglasses to her face and slipped them over her eyes. Two bejeweled wings fanned out above the lenses and sparkled in the light.

The night was still young at the Aiken Center for the Arts' Antiques in the Heart of Aiken opening night gala, but Thompson had found her treasure in the offerings of Ben Adams.

"I love coming to this show because we get so many great things and the vendors bring such unique things," Thompson said. "Ben always has something very unique, and this year it's these sunglasses.
