A store 'like Christmas morning'

Customers entering Linda's Cellar in Chaska have two competing urges -- to give owner Linda Heger a hug and to spot their future purchases.Often the urges merge into an embrace with arms wrapped around Heger and eyes wrapped around an achingly old-fashioned cupboard.Heger designed it that way. She opens her downtown Chaska doors just one weekend a month. And when she does, her customers, mostly women, are waiting outside. They arrive early to see the store, which looks nothing like it did last time it was open for business. Each month, Heger packs the place with an entirely new batch of antiques she and her buyers have found. "It's like Christmas morning," said Andrea Foeber of Savage. Years back, Heger set up shop in larger antique malls, stopping in weekly to add new items. She's also had a store that was open each weekend.

Chocolate lovers sweet on February holiday

By next Wednesday, pink and red flowers, cards and candy boxes will arrive at doorsteps, at offices and in mailboxes, as sweethearts and spouses engage in the annual St. Valentine's Day ritual of exchanging heartfelt sentiments that appeal to the heartstrings, as well as to the taste buds and the other senses.

Chances are, those who lack a mate won't miss out on at least the sweet taste of the holiday.

That includes those who give up candy for Lent, since Valentine's Day falls a week before Ash Wednesday.

Valentine's Day, ranked behind Halloween, Easter and Christmas, is one of the chief candy-consuming occasions in the United States--particularly when it comes to chocolate.

The free things that go with lunches

This is not like the US President saying "the jury is still out on global warming", but it still failed to convince certain members of my family.

The lunches are not exactly free, but there are free things that go with lunches.

We are not talking here of the sort of lunches and teas that people put on in order to get an audience or workshop participation.

There is a strong belief in the region that if a thing is worth doing, it is worth putting on a feed for.

An army commander may be able to get full attendance at a press conference by merely decreeing one.

But other worthies know the media is a particularly difficult audience to woo and often throw in a munchie or two to sweeten the invitation.

Let me not scoff, as you might say.

Ski Country Antiques launches modern expansion

Its easy to see why Ski Country Antiques on Floyd Hill is in need of a distribution center. The large, barn-shaped building is fully stocked with antiques and has already been expanded. Now the antique store is developing a new line of furniture, making an additional building necessary. The new development started when Ski Country Antiques owner Brian Kleinwachter got together with his construction-savvy Floyd Hill neighbor, George Johnston. The two became partners and formed Floyd Hill Development LLC.They bought 9 acres of land in February 2005 on the north side of Interstate 70 and started designing the distribution building, which will be phase one of a much bigger, $3 million construction project.Phase two includes three smaller buildings that Floyd Hill Development LLC hopes to lease out to a bank, convenience store and maybe even a small lodge.
