Living with an uneasy calm

Folks come by to take in the elegant atmosphere and soak in some of the old-fashioned Southern hospitality given out each day by owner Vivian Strange.
And they come to play with the cats.
But the talk around town these days doesnt center around her precious felines, Gracie and Madeline.
Rather, it all has to do with what will soon take place across the town square the double-murder trial of accused murder suspect Steven Bixby, of Abbeville.
Its just a wound thats getting picked to death, Strange said. I cant imagine what (the families) have gone through. My heart breaks for the families, but at the same time theres nothing you can do. Im sure they need that closure.
Bixby has been charged in the Dec. 8, 2003, shooting deaths of Abbeville County Sheriffs Sgt.

Rare sisterhood of retail brings vibrancy to North Mississippi

Maybe it was only good timing that restaurateur Polly Bangs spied the "For Lease" signs last spring on North Mississippi Avenue and immediately called Jamie Jensen, a friend who sold clothes and jewelry out of a Saturday Market stall.

"Get over here," Bangs said.

Then Bangs called Sarah Shaoul, a friend of a friend who ran on online children's clothing shop, and said the same thing.

Keiran Best walked into the building at the intersection of Shaver Street -- the very first space she checked out for her new shop, Porch Light Antiques -- and thought, "This is it."

Best saw vibrant promise where not long ago the strip of North Mississippi languished with a weak economic pulse. The neighborhood, tucked just east of Interstate 5 and south of Alberta Street, was known more for crime and grime.

New airport as the Lopez Jaena airport?

THE Dr. Graciano Lopez Jaena Foundation Inc (DGLJFI) wanted to convince President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo that the Iloilo International Airport, located in the municipality of Cabatuan in Iloilo Province, be named after a local hero.

The Iloilo International Airport, which is sprawled on a 188-hectare site between the municipalities of Sta. Barbara and Cabatuan, is 19 kilometers away from Iloilo City. It is expected to be operational April this year.

How to ease downtown's parking pains?

When he and his wife moved here from California 22 years ago, they felt like they were back in 1950s Los Angeles, when going downtown was a neat thing to do.

Eating steaks on the River Walk, shopping at stores that hadn't high-tailed it to suburban malls, browsing for antiques or just walking around drew the couple downtown several times a week.

Paying to park back then was worth it, said Bricken, 63. "It was a great place to be."

But over the years, the streets became more crowded and parking prices steadily increased. And between the pleasant surprises, such as bumping into and chatting with Henry Cisneros one night, came the shocks.

Like the time about five years ago in a private lot, when drivers parked in the aisles behind and in front of his car, trapping him and his brother for hours.
