Three structure fires within 15 hours
SHERRILLS FORD - Firefighters from around the area stayed busy Thursday and Friday responding to three unrelated blazes in Caldwell and Catawba counties. A 100-year-old antique store burned in the Sherrills Ford community late Thursday. Old Gold Mine Antiques was no longer open. However, when the store was open, many say it was the Wal-Mart of the early 1900s offering home supplies, collectibles and other treasures. Firefighters from Bandys, Sherrills Ford and Catawba fire departments responded to the blaze around 6:30 p.m. The store is located in the 5900 block of Sherrills Ford Road. The inside of the building was a total loss, said Sherrills Ford Fire Chief Keith Bost. A damage estimate is not available. Firefighters in Lenoir and Gamewell responded to a house fire off Broadway Street in Lenoir around 9:30 p.m.
New/old president for antique car club
Tom Lloyd has received the gavel for the third time as president of the Orange County Antique Club, taking over for Bob Hull. Lloyd served terms as president in 1985-86, 1993-94 and now in 2007. "This is your club," Tom said as he addressed the club members in a crowded Town of Wallkill Community Center. On hand at the Jan. 5 meeting were both the youngest member of the club, Rebecca Lynn Schnefel, who turned 3 months old on Christmas, and the oldest member, Gerhold Wanamaker, who will be 89 years young this month. Talks are already taking place for the club's annual car show and the "granddaddy" of them all, in Rhinebeck. It's never too early to start planning. Brighton coming to Shoppes
PEORIA - Brighton Collectibles, a women's accessories store, is venturing into central Illinois for the first time, with a store opening Saturday at The Shoppes at Grand Prairie. It will be the only Brighton Collectibles store between Chicago and St. Louis, said company spokesman Michael Hecht. "Peoria is a very important location; it's between St. Louis and Chicago, and that's a large market trading area," he said. "We also think the mall we are going into really epitomizes what we stand for. It's a lifestyle mall, it's a great area to shop, it has great co-tenants." Hecht also noted the city's stable employment, as well as the presence of heavy equipment maker Caterpillar Inc. "Peoria is a great town," he said. The Brighton brand was launched in 1991 with a single collection of belts.
