15000 antiques seized by Iran's police

LONDON, January 21 (IranMania) - Commander of State Cultural Heritage Guards Unit has announced that more than 15,000 antiques were confiscated from smugglers in the past 12 months, Iran Daily reported.

State Cultural Heritage Guards Unit became operational following the increase in the smuggling of antiques and illegal excavations in historical sites as well as the shortage of guards for safeguarding artifacts.

With the stationing of guards in sensitive areas, which were excavated illegally, the unit managed to prevent the exit of over 15,000 items from the country.

In an interview with the Persian daily Tehran-e Emrouz, head of the unit Brigadier General Abbasali Rouhi announced that some 91 international gangs have been busted, thus a decline in the rate of smuggling is in sight.

Antique store sues New York's homeless

The owner of a luxury antiques store in Manhattan is suing four homeless people for $1 million, claiming they make the area look untidy and are putting off potential customers.

According to legal documents, Karl Kemp is demanding an order that keeps the four unnamed defendants at least 100 feet away from his shop on Madison Avenue, in the heart of New York's ritzy Upper East Side and yards from high-end retailers such as Gucci, Prada and Cartier.

For the past two years, the court papers say, the four homeless people have spent "significant amounts of time" on the pavement, "consuming alcoholic beverages from open bottles, performing various bodily functions such as urinating or spitting on the sidewalk."

Where to take a first date

You want relaxed, not overpowering, stylish but not necessarily chic. Here are 10 picks, in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens

Past, future of go-fast boats on display at Boat Show

Joey Ruiter didn't set out to design the aquatic version of a Star Wars pod racer, but the award-winning designer with more than two dozen patents said his newest idea, The Front-Runner, is more aircraft than boat.

Riding on a hydrofoil, its hull lifts out of the water, pulled by two 215-horsepower jet-drive engines mounted in forward pontoons. The boat is expected to do 80 mph.

But its airplane-like steering system is expected to allow it to bank much the way a plane does. Or a pod racer -- the fantastic flying craft found in "Star Wars: Episode I," constructed of an anti-gravity pod pulled by two or more huge turbine engines.

Anti-gravity pods may be hard to come by here on earth, but Ruiter said The Front-Runner may be the next best thing.
