Princely prints at the Morse Museum

WINTER PARK -- The superb new exhibit at the Morse Museum of American Art is certainly at home in its softly lighted gallery. But, given its charmingly antique quality, the dozens of works in "Dickens to Benton: Rare Books and Works on Paper" would seem just as suited for a quaint library.

An 1835 edition of Charles Dickens' "Bleak House" is displayed in one case, its richly marbleized cover enhanced by the nearby example of American art pottery, a turn-of-the-century Weller "Dickensware" vase that depicts Mr. Peckinsniff.

Just down the gallery wall is a treasure-trove of prints, paintings and sketches by some of the 19th century's greatest artists. The boldly patterned fan design Paul Gauguin made with gouache and pastel between 1887 and 1888 shows exotic ladies lounging, while a Mary Cassatt etching from about 1905 reveals the fine lines in the American impressionist's tender studies of mothers and babies.

HOT BOX by Jim Bawden Television to talk about

Shhh! Ghost Whisperer starts off with our gal, Jennifer Love Hewitt, giving a speech at her old alma mater on how today's students can get into the antique business, too, which must really set the coeds on fire. But she does notice the ghost of an evil, old cheerleader. Guest is Grammy nominee Mary J. Blige (CBS , CTV at 8).

Mummy Dearest: First ghosts, then a mummy wanders off on Las Vegas. It was a real mummy used for an exhibit. Police are stymied. Time for tough guy Jimmy Caan to show Josh Duhamel how it used to be done (NBC, Global at 9).

SATURDAY

Returning: Two Canadian shows: Robson Arms with new episodes with the likes of Leslie Nielsen, Linda Kash, Joe Flaherty and Colin James (CTV at 9). Then comes the second season of Jeff Ltd., starring Jeff Seymour (CTV at 9:30).

Treasure, in plain sight

GENEVA -- Bob Fry walked into Geneva's Scentimental Gardens shop with a family treasure carefully wrapped in tissue paper. Inside was a gold pocket watch, gray with age yet still keeping time. Fry inherited it from his Uncle Lafayette, an intelligent, independent farmer who could build anything and kept his homemade honey on relatives' tables for decades.

Fry often visited Lafayette on his family's Pennsylvania farm, the same farm granted to relatives back in 1760, the deed of which was signed by William Penn's son.

By comparison, Lafayette's Civil War-era pocket watch is relatively new. And as Fry found out, it's not worth all that much, at least not to anyone outside the family. "It's gold-filled, so it's only worth about $150," Fry said, "But it means a lot to me."
